New (to us) House Planning

As you may have read here by now if you've followed along for a few weeks, Juston and I bought a new (to us, it was built in 1990 so it's not new) house and while it's a great house, there's a lot we are planning to do to it before we move any furniture in. The first order of business, which Juston has already started working on, is removing all of the textured ceilings. I was adamant that it wasn't something that had to be done, but if we were going to, it HAD to be done before we moved any furniture in since it is literally in every. single. room. He has only been at it for about a week, but by putting in a few hours every night after work, Juston has almost finished scraping the entire main floor. Only the whole second floor to go...

After that comes paint. Everything is literally this darn shade of tan or khaki. I'm not sure what to call it, but I am sure it's all got to go. The ceilings aren't very tall so combining that with the dark floors and that dark color on the walls, the rooms are just begging to be lightened up. I'm hoping that a new paint color and the texture off the ceilings will make a big difference in the overall aesthetic of the house.

After paint, we are moving on to changing out all of the door knobs, light plates and quite a few light fixtures. I've been searching for what I want in these things and the light plates are a simple switch, I'll just go with something basic, neutral and cost effective. We know this isn't our forever home, but I feel like simple changes like these will help with re-sale when the time comes and perhaps help us to get our money back out of it and hopefully a little extra.

The first light fixture I want to switch out will be the first ones you see coming into the house, the front porch lights. I know that I want something that looks like gas lanterns. Since my dream of Charleston appears to be as far off as ever, I'm trying my best to bring a little bit of Charleston to me with some lights similar to those below.

We don't have gas hooked up in the house and don't have plans to add it, so I just want something that looks the part.

Next, you move into the foyer of the house and I'm eyeing this pendant from Arhaus instead of the boobie light that's there now.

There are boobie lights all over the house by the way, like the one you see above. I can not unsee it after a friend pointed out to me forever ago that that's exactly what these lights look like. How much of an improvement would that gorgeous Anabella pendant light be?!

I'm hoping to switch out the dining room light as well and am loving this Eiffel Tower inspired light,

Other pendants from Arhaus can be found here

I mentioned above changing out the doorknobs as well and how gorgeous are these from Emtek.

Like I said, it's a great house already, but I just can't wait to make it feel more like ours, starting with the changes I mentioned above. I'm also really excited to post about all of our fun changes here. Hope y'all have the best weekend and no one pulls anything over on you Saturday. It's April Fools Day so look alive and trust no one!

Easiest Cake Ever

I'm pretty sure that outside of just buying a cake from a bakery, this is the easiest cake ever. I guess it would fall into the semi-homeade category? But if you ever find yourself crunched on time and need a quick dessert to toss together for an event, this one can't be any easier. You need the ingredients pictured below:

1 tub Cool Whip
1 Can (drained) crushed pineapple
1 box vanilla pudding mix (3.4 oz)
Store bought Angel Food cake

From there, you literally have three steps to a complete cake.

Step 1. mis cool whip, drained pineapple and pudding mix in a mixing bowl until combined.

Step 2. Cut the angel food cake in half as pictured below.

Step 3. Ice the cake. You'll want to spread the icing on the bottom layer, then place the top of the cake back on and ice the top of it as well as the sides. That's it...you're finished.

Whatever Wednesday

I used to do these Whatever Wednesday posts pretty regularly but honestly forgot about them so it's been awhile since I've done one. So what better time than now to revive them than today? Let's jump right in.

What I'm Wearing

Sam and Libby shoes from Target

Okay, I'm not wearing this outfit this actual second...but I got the top and skirt in the mail this week and they'll be coming to Charleston with us on our upcoming trip. The skirt is SO much cuter in person than it is online (which I already thought it was cute on the site or I wouldn't have ordered it obviously), but when I put this skirt on, I didn't want to take it off! The material is a dream, it fits like a glove and it's just so fun! It runs true to size, as do the other two items I posted. Oh, and the skirt comes in two other colors as well. I got the red.

What I'm cooking

I have this recipe for cheeseburger lettuce wraps on the menu for tomorrow. I've never tried it before, but how much easier can you get?! Plus, if you're watching carb intake, the lettuce is a perfect substitute. I'll be sure and post if they're a keeper or not!

What I'm reading

I just finished this book:

And I'm just starting this book:

I read everything Karen White puts out, and they never disappoint. I'm only one chapter in to this one, but I have no doubt I'll love it. It's book five in a series that take place in Charleston, SC. Southernmost also takes place in Charleston. Anyone notice a theme with the books I pick out? I'll post a book review of Southernmost once I have a few more books to post about as well, but I would recommend it.

What I'm loving

J Crew is killing it with all of their spring collection! How cute is this navy gingham off the shoulder top?!

Carter: Eleven Months

Baby: Carter Scott
Age: 11 months
Weight: 19 pounds 5 ounces. I'm convinced he doesn't gain weight because he literally NEVER stops moving.
Length: 27.5 inches roughly. See above, it's nearly impossible to accurately measure this boy!
Diaper Size: 4
Clothes: 9 month, some 12 month and still fitting into a lot of 6-12 month things as well. I feel like he's so much smaller than Caroline was at this same age for some reason. I need to go back and see what her stats were and compare.
Sleep: Naptime is still from about 11-1 and then again from about 5-6:00.  Bedtime is 8:30-9:00 and he gets up around 7:00.The times change somehow meant that it was necessary to wake up an hour earlier than he was? So random, but her has FOMO
Milestones: Finally, his first tooth came through! It sprouted while we were in Alabama a couple of weeks ago. He'll say Dada, Papa (he whispers this one), he's just started saying bye bye, he waves and claps like a champ and loves giving a good high five. He's walking all over the place and loves to carry large objects while walking just for an added challenge. He also randomly started taking his pacifier when his tooth was fixing to come through. I'd guess it felt good on ehis gums, but now he takes it when he naps but that's it. He'll also point to things he wants or in the direction he wants to go. He has little play phones that he will put up to his ear if you say "hello" and he loves playing peek-a-boo with curtains, blankets, pillows, etc.

I can't believe this is his last monthly update...next time, it'll be a year!

Weekend Happenings

The weather around our parts could not be beat this weekend! We spent a large portion of our waking hours outside soaking it all in. I believe after a few false alarms, spring has finally arrived, my friends. We had my sisters kids with us Friday night and all day Saturday and Caroline and Carter just eat up all that extra attention. I took advantage of the extra help and got some baking and yard work done.

I made this coffee cake for our neighbor who just got home from having back surgery.

An aside, but this pan is allegedly non-stick. Well, I still greased it a bit since the recipe called for it. After letting it cool AND loosening the sides with a knife, the thing still wouldn't turn out no matter how hard I tried, so I just delivered it in the pan. Tacky? Maybe. But effective nonetheless.

I got some pansies put out in my window boxes Saturday and I'd really like to add some ivy or some sort of vine, but there aren't any our here yet, so I guess I'll have to wait. I also put my ferns out on the porch. I think it looks so much more inviting and really ups the curb appeal so maybe these flowers will help me get this house sold ;)

I had to stop by the eye doctor to pick up from contacts and Caroline just loved trying on some frames.

Carter ate his first full meal in the high chair. This high chair was mine when I was little, the Caroline used it. Well, Carter hates it as much as she did around his age. He lasted maybe five minutes before he started trying to wiggle out of it. And check out how hard little man sacked out after he'd played with the kids all morning...

I got a lot done around the house Sunday and got started packing for our upcoming trip to Charleston! I swear, no matter how far in advance I start packing, I always leave the most random things when we travel. I forgot my pajamas and Carter's diapers when we went to Alabama a couple of weeks ago. Can't wait to see what I forget this trip! Happy Monday, Y'all!

Make Your Bed

One thing that I'm fairly committed to updating once we get into the new house is the bedding in our master bedroom. I got a duvet from Pottery  Barn the year we got married )before I even knew what a duvet was while ordering it haha) and we have had the same one ever since. I've never updated our bedding and I was ready for a change prior to finding out we were moving, but getting into a new space definitely makes me more than ready for a refresh. I have found lots that I really like, but for some reason, I have commitment issues and can't make myself pull the trigger.

Some days, while I'm browsing online searching for the perfect bedding, I think I'll go the clean and crisp all white route and just add in some color via monogrammed shams or with our drapery and throw pillows. The only issue I foresee with all white bedding would obviously be the fact that we have two young kids and while they're aren't overly messy, accidents happen.

I do feel that if I did white or even solid ivory, an interesting headboard could be a fun way to incorporate some visual interest. I'm not a huge tufted headboard lover, even though I know they're everywhere right now, but the one above is really pretty. I even like the thought of mixing shades of white and ivory or cream together to add some depth to the look of bedding. I'm a big fan on tone on tone.

Another fear I have with the white is that our room will end up feeling like a hotel. I know some people may like that feel, but I'm not one of them.

How fun is this visual for layering your bed when you  make it up? I'm definitely a visual person, so I like having this handy chart to reference what some people use when making their bed. Ours isn't this elaborate.
Bedding can cost a small fortune when you start adding it all up. First you have a duvet, coverlet, bedspread, etc, then your bedskirt, then sheets and blankets, shams, pillowcases, decorative pillows....Every time I go to put all this in my cart, I see the total and can't make myself commit to that particular style for the next ten years or so (which is how long we've had our current bedding).

Here's another look I like because it has a lot of visual interest and depth to it.

Then I love the idea of adding in some floral prints on some pieces that could be changed out seasonally or whenever I feel the need for a small change. I know I'm way overthinking this bedding thing, but like I said, it's an investment and I want to make the right one. I think maybe getting a solid duvet and mixing the pattern in via coverlet, shams, throws, etc may be the route I choose.

Here are a few more that I love.

And finally, just for reference, here is our current bedding and our bed just as an idea of what I'm working with. I'd really rather change our bedroom furniture as well, because this is definitely not what I would choose for the master, but Juston had already purchased most of our furniture before we married. We are going to sell a lot of it before we move and update a few area, but I don't think the bedroom furniture will be among what we sell just yet. There's nothing wrong with it, I just wouldn't have picked it. I prefer something a bit smaller and likely antique or at least an antique look, like a four poster bed.

Does the top of our headboard, footboard and mirror remind anyone else of a mustache? I think maybe that's my issue with it ha. Happy weekend everyone!

First Birthday Party Planning

How is it even possible that it's been almost an entire year since Carter Scott Pate came into our lives?? I think time definitely seems to pass more quickly after you have kids. It's just a rapid succession of milestones and schedules and before you know it, a week bleeds into a month bleeds into a year and you look up and your kids are grown up. I'm getting ahead of myself, but that's how it feels like it's happening right now.

Carter will be one on April 26 so I have started brainstorming ideas for his party theme so that I can (hopefully) be on the ball with getting the necessary decorations, his little outfit, cake ordered, etc. I haven't committed to a theme just yet, but I have narrowed it down to a few that I think are cute for a little man. Obviously, he's only turning one so he could care less what his party is, but I enjoy planning and entertaining, so this one is all Mama. I've searched Pinterest (obviously) for some inspiration on the ideas I've had and will likely just choose based on what seems the most doable, or on what Caroline thinks is cute. Her first birthday was Busy Bee themed...still appropriate for her.

Idea #1 Circus

This cake is pretty simple, but we usually don't have a huge amount of people, so we wouldn't need anything bigger that this and I like that it's simple.

How adorable are those little cookies!? I've got the links to all of these ideas on my Pinterest Boards by the way. And how about these pics below for some cute snack ideas...

For these cupcakes, since it's for Carter, I wouldn't use the pink animal crackers, just the white ones. I mean, I guess that means I'd have to eat the pink ones to get them out of the way ;)

And how about a shirt for Carter, and a shirt for Mama.

I would probably never wear that shirt, but it's still funny and fitting if I choose the circus route. I've also seen some really cute smocked circus john johns that are more our style, but the t-shirt would be cute for the cake eating (messing) portion of a party. Or to have pictures done in and made into Thank You cards.

Idea #2 Peter Rabbit

Again, Carter has a smocked john john with little rabbits on it that would be very fitting for this party theme, but I do love this little onesie as well. It's would be cute with his name embroidered on it as well.

And I actually found so many cute cake ideas for this theme.

They are both so cute I don't know which I'd choose. My aunt and uncle own a bakery and usually do the cake as their gift, so I'd probably leave it up to their discretion, but both are so adorable!

I also think doing some little carrot cake petit fours with a carrot made of icing on top would be adorable.

And I just love all the napkins, plates and cups above for easy decor.

There are so many cute options with this theme as well.

Idea #3 Barnyard Bash

How fun is this setup? And the snack possibilities are endless and in some cases kinda gross...

Some cute little decor ideas...

I love the high chair banner and I'm pretty sure I could make that easy enough.

Anyone have any cute baby boy party ideas I haven't found yet? Please feel free to e-mail or comment and share them with me! I haven't committed to anything yet, so who knows, but I think I may be leaning toward the circus right now...or the Peter Rabbit...or thebarnyard. haha
